Extra-curriculum activities

Dance

The Boys, Junior and Senior Dance Groups work on routines throughout the school year. The students and their teachers work together to choreograph the routines. They meet weekly to rehearse the item until they are a polished and professional act! The groups perform at school functions such as assemblies and open days.

The Senior and Junior Dance Groups perform at the prestigious Sydney North Dance Festival. During this festival costuming, make-up and hair styling have been worked out to perfection. When the stage is set and spectacular lighting illuminates.

Drama

Our drama clubs meet before school for students who are interested in performing in drama presentations. The students write and put together plays. Our clubs audition for the prestigious Arts Alive Drama Festival. In 2015 both our Year 3/4 and Year 5/6 drama groups were successful in their auditions and performed in the Drama Festival at the Parade Theatre NIDA.

Congratulations to our Year 5/6 and Year 3/4 drama groups who have successfully auditioned to perform at the Arts Alive Drama Festival at the Parade Theatre NIDA.

Our teachers use a balance of teaching styles throughout the school day to cater for the student's individual differences and preferred learning styles.

Choir

Our choirs have a reputation for choral excellence. All of our students are encouraged to sing and they sing beautifully.

Children from Kindergarten to Year 6 have the opportunity to participate in choir.

We are very proud to have the following choirs:

  • Kindergarten Choir
  • Year 1/2 Choir
  • Year 3/4 Choir
  • Year 5/6 Choir.

Each year our primary choirs have the opportunity to represent our school at State, Regional and local Music Festivals. They have the opportunity to perform at fabulous venues such as the Sydney Town Hall and the Sydney Opera House. These opportunities create special, memorable experiences for our students.

All of our choirs love performing at whole school assemblies, the ANZAC Day ceremony and our Presentation Day.

They also have the opportunity to share their talents and love of singing by performing locally at preschools, nursing homes and community events.

Band

Beacon Hill has three magnificent bands which accompany the school at functions and perform for a variety of audiences including, retirement villages and festivals.

Students can participate in Band in Year 3 to Year 6. Being part of a band is a wonderful experience for all children.

The Junior, Intermediate and Concert Bands rehearse weekly in the MPC.

Debating and public speaking

At Beacon Hill Public School we teach children the skills and etiquette associated with public speaking and debating. It is an important component of our teaching and learning programs.

From year 3 to year 6, a variety of public speaking activities are provided to the students. Topics are selected to enable students to research it and then present their findings to the class. A variety of techniques are employed to assist the students to evaluate their efforts and to improve on their performance in a constructive way. Some techniques include peer, self and teacher assessment.

Debating against other schools occur each year. Students from years 5 and 6 are selected according to their ability after several impromptu talks. A team for each grade is entered into the Premier's Debating Competition.

Multicultural Perspectives Public Speaking Competition

The competition is aimed at raising multicultural awareness in NSW primary schools while developing their interest in public speaking, improving confidence and speech-writing skills, not to mention making them think on their feet!
